How to Design and Care For Shade Gardens

Organic Matter as a Mulch

Many of the organic materials used as soil amendments can also be used as mulches. The difference is in the way they are applied to the soil. A mulch is intended to lie on top of the soil, whereas a soil amendment is incorporated into the soil.

Mulches help keep the soil cool, reduce water evaporation, deter weeds, and aid in the long-term improvement of the soil. A layer of material 2 to 3 inches deep is usually recommended, and should be applied in the spring before weed growth begins and before the summer heat. For winter protection in cold winter areas, replenish the mulch before the ground freezes.
