How to Design and Care For Shade Gardens

Eastern Redbud

Eastern RedbudBest known for its pinkish red, pea-shaped flowers that bloom on bare branches in the spring, eastern redbud blooms about the same time as the dogwood; together, they make an attractive combination.
It is a year-round performer, with its green, heart-shaped leaves, yellow fall color, interesting seed pods, and reddish brown bark in winter. It grows fast to 25 or 35 feet in height and an equal width, with an irregular round head and attractive, horizontally tiered branches.

Eastern redbud will grow in light shade or sun, and in acid or alkaline soil. It is an excellent tree on the patio, in a container, or anywhere that space is limited.

‘Forest Pansy’ has red branches and beautiful purple foliage that is best viewed where the light can shine through. ‘Oklahoma’, with its dark red flowers and shiny foliage, is the best redbud for high heat and alkaline soils. ‘Alba’ has white flowers, and is susceptible to fireblight and borers.
